Cheek Laceration
Symptoms
Uncomfortable with rein contact and shaking head.
Findings
Laceration to the cheek caused by very sharp enamel points cutting the cheek.
Treatment
Routine floating to remove sharp enamel points and rounding to reduce pinching of the soft tissue.
Outcome
Headshaking stopped and pony much happier with rein contact
Large Hooks
Symptoms
Unsettled with rein contact and opening mouth.
Findings
Large hooks on the first upper cheek teeth and last lower teeth.
Treatment
Reduce hooks in two stages using diamond disc and float mouth.
Outcome
Horse stopped opening his mouth with the contact and much more settled.
Shear Mouth
Symptoms
Difficulty eating Hay.
Findings
Very steep table angles of teeth on one side normal on the other. Horse eating on one side of its mouth only.
Treatment
Over time gradually trying to restore more normal table angle using power tools. On going treatment required.
Outcome
An improvement in table angles and ability to eat hay. Change to a chopped forage diet and grass.
Parrot Mouth
Symptoms
None.
Findings
Overlong upper incisors due to lack of wear on lower incisors.
Treatment
Reduce to a normal level using a diamond disc. This was achieved over three treatments
Outcome
Work has allowed the normal movement of the
lower jaw to be restored.
Cheek Ulcers
Symptoms
Tenderness eating hard feed and slow eater.
Findings
Sharp enamel points causing cheek ulcers both sides of the mouth towards the back of the mouth.
Treatment
Remove sharp enamel points by floating the mouth.
Outcome
This allowed the ulcers to heal within two weeks. Horse immediately able to eat its hard feed normally.
Wolf Tooth
Symptoms
Owner reported horse difficult and unsettled with the bit.
Findings
Wolf Tooth noted on one side.
Treatment
Sedation by the vet and wolf tooth extracted. One week without a bit advised.
Outcome
Horse reported to be much more settled with the bit.
